Nope, frivolous revelry is put aside as the entire community pulls together to get behind the Revelstoke Freeride Fest from Jan. 8 to 12. Now in its fourth year, the centerpiece of this six day event is www.btsam.dk/new/sam/northface.asp the Swatch Freeride World Tour by The North Face, where both skiers and snowboarders attack big mountain chutes and lines heli accessed outside of RMR's area boundaries.Last year's event had a bit of everything   howlin' winds and cold temps, cold smoke Interior powder snow, and some of the best skiers and riders on the planet. Revelstoke Mountain Resort is the first stop on the tour and the only resort in Canada and to host this five star star championship event.Revy has a stomping party scene, too, and the Big Eddy pub, Benoit's Wine Bar (on the mountain) and the Regent hotel all hosting aprs ski parties. There will be a third annual Retro Ski Party (break out those Nevica suits or White Stag stretch pants) at the Roxy Theatre, and a bittersweet moment (and a few tears shed) at the Jim Jack Memorial Party at the Big Eddy Pub on Jan. 10. Jack, a Washington state resident who worked as head honcho for the Freeride World Tour, died in a terrible avalanche accident outside of Stevens Pass last year. I couldn't stand skiing in the bulk of a down either. I much prefer the articulated joints and slim 'active' fit of the parka I have. I dunno about you, but I need all the stretch/articulation I can get when I ski. Anything like a fleece or sweater under a North Face Coats for Men down jacket would likely render me both Michelin man comical looking AND kid in a too small snowsuit uncomfortable/immobile.
